HDFC Bank Profit Falls to ₹16,258 Cr; Bonus Issue Buzz Rises

HDFC Bank, India’s largest private lender, reported a decline in consolidated net profit to ₹16,258 crore for the first quarter of FY25, down from ₹18,920 crore in the previous quarter. The fall comes despite a substantial ₹9,128 crore gain from the recent HDB Financial Services IPO.

The bank’s financial report reveals that rising provisions and credit costs are the primary culprits behind the dip. Total provisions surged to ₹14,442 crore, up sharply from ₹13,500 crore last quarter, reflecting a more cautious stance in light of asset quality concerns post-merger with HDFC Ltd.

HDB IPO Gains Not Enough to Offset Rising Costs

While the successful listing of HDB Financial Services provided a strong boost to the bank’s non-interest income, it was not sufficient to counterbalance the elevated provisioning. Operating profit also remained under pressure due to increased interest expenses and integration costs post-merger.

Balance Sheet Strong, But Challenges Persist

Despite the profit dip, the bank maintains a robust balance sheet. Gross NPAs stood at 1.39%, and the capital adequacy ratio was well above regulatory requirements. However, analysts believe the short-term outlook remains mixed due to continued pressure on margins and provisioning levels.

Is an HDFC Bank Bonus Issue on the Cards?

Amid the earnings release, speculation is growing around a possible HDFC Bank bonus issue in the upcoming quarters. Market watchers suggest that a bonus issue could be a strategic move to reward shareholders, improve liquidity, and boost investor sentiment after the recent share performance.

The bank has not made any official announcement regarding a bonus issue, but investors are keeping a close eye on any updates during the upcoming AGM and quarterly filings.
